Engineering for Natural Disaster

Natural disasters can take a toll on any building.  Mitigation of the effects on the structure requires careful planning, proper engineering, and the right materials. A finance corporation in Grafton, Wisconsin required engineering for a new addition to resist severe weather conditions in order to protect important equipment containing sensitive data.

Precast hollowcore and wall panels were engineered with reinforcements in the hollowcore to prevent the building from damage during high winds such as a tornado. It was a collaboration of effort between the engineer of record, precaster, and J3 Engineering Group to ensure lateral forces were calculated correctly and that each panel was engineered and erected properly.

As a result, the financial institution will now be able to provide better protection to their important information and equipment as well as maintain more storage space.

Goodwill Expanding Distribution Center

Goodwill industries of Southeastern Wisconsin is expanding their manufacturing center in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, where workers do assembly and packaging for business clients. The new addition will add 81,900 square feet to the 156,000 square-foot building. This will make room for a distribution center as well for merchandise that did not sell in stores to be distributed to secondary markets such as foreign countries.

J3 Engineering Group provided engineering and drafting services for structural precast wall panels to the new addition. We were able to work with the information provided and coordinate between the precaster and architect to create detailed structural drawings. In addition, coordination with the engineer of record and architect were imperative to meeting the precaster’s schedule. A unique aspect of the panels were future openings that were engineered to allow for windows, doors, or truck loading docks.

Goodwill currently has locations in 13 counties in Wisconsin and 10 in northern Illinois. Many are retail stores where they recycle or sell gently used items donated by the community and provide training and education for those with disabilities or disadvantages who want to gain greater independence. The Sturtevant distribution center will begin operational changes in spring of 2016.

An $18 million dollar, 107 unit apartment project is underway in Downtown Green Bay, Wisconsin. The apartments will include many amenities with the option of a studio, or one and two bedroom penthouses. In addition, they will have stunning views of the Fox River and city views of Green Bay.

The 127,546 square foot apartment complex required a precast parking structure that would support 8 stories of cold-formed steel and remain within budget and schedule. After evaluating the option to use cast in place or work with precast, it was determined that precast was the best solution.

J3 Engineering Group worked with a precaster to engineer precast floors, beams, columns and double tees for the parking structure on this project, making it more economical in the process. A double tee floor system was designed to support the cold-formed shear walls and elevator and stair shafts were designed to withstand lateral loads of the structure above.

When complete, the apartments will include amenities such as a heated underground parking structure, designer style kitchens with granite counter tops and steel appliances, a fitness center, and a club room with a media lounge. It is slated for completion the summer of 2017.
